    Windows Live Rocks

So it all started with one email telling me that I wouldn't be able to access my Hotmail account (or should I say Windows Live Hotmail) via Outlook Express - because the DAV protocol is crap (basically). To be honest, I was less than impressed. I hardly every visit my email account through IE7. I just use OE. Instead the email suggested I use something called Windows Live Mail.

So I went and downloaded it - note: you can't download the installation *.exe directly you have to jump through some hoops with a installer and downloaded *.exe instead (WLinstaller.exe). Which was a pain in the ass, for some reason it would take ages to scan. I eventually got it working - Microsoft work on this little app of yours, even a geek like me had to do some major troubleshooting to get this working.

So I started using WLMail Client, and to be honest I love the damn thing. It also supports newsgroups (handy if you are a Microsoft beta tester like me). My only gripe is that is seems to take a while to detect and download new emails. And by a while I mean a good 10-20secs slow than OE. This is an annoyance to me, I can see I have the email in my inbox (via WLMessenger) but the actual email hasn't appeared in the inbox of WLMail Client, it just seems to sync a lot slower. The functionality is also somewhat broken regarding newsgroups, I can't get it to download every single message from the beginning of the groups life. Other than that, I really really like what Microsoft have developed here. It also integrates with WLMessenger nicely as well (I updated that too, was running quite an old version).

So I'm pretty happy with WLMail Client and WLMessenger. And I was just sitting here thinking, "man I haven't blogged anything in ages". The reason is simple, it simple takes too long using the web interface on Windows Live Spaces. So long that it's put me off updating my blog for a while. So I decided to download Windows Live Writer (WLW). I'm actually using it right now to type out this blog and shortly, I'll be publishing via WLW aswell. I also had to download and install WLW using WLinstaller.exe (urgh, I hate that thing). My only gripe so far with WLW is that I can't have the same fancy windowed borders that I can with WLMail Client and WLMessenger. Other than that, it's pretty cool (is "cool" still "in"? :D )

All of these apps are branded under "Windows Live" there's a shit load more too. See here for a full list. To download any of the apps I talked about in this post, go here.

I'd highly recommend trying out Windows Live Mail Client and Windows Live Writer. Chances are you are already using Windows Live Messenger :P

    Yeah.... where have I been?!

You’ll notice lately that I having being blogging much. Apart from coming back from holiday recently (went to India), I’ve been hooked on a game called Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. Simple put this game is amazing. I’ll quick explain it.

Earth is being invaded by the Strogg (baddies!) and the GDF – Global Defence Force (goodies!) have to stop them. Each team (Strogg/GDF) has a selection of characters to chose, to play as:-

    Aggressor/Solider

    Technician/Medic

    Constructor/Engineer

    Oppressor/Field Ops

    Infiltrator/Covert Ops

The game features 12 maps – in which the attacking team has usually around 3 objectives to complete. They have to complete the first objective in order to progress to the next. Each objective requires a different class to complete it. So for example, you might need to hack the Shield Generator – for this you will need to play as Covert Ops. There are 3 types of objectives. Build/construct, destroy and hack. For which you’ll need Constructor/Engineer, Aggressor/Solider and Infiltrator/Covert Ops respectively.

That being said, this isn’t a “rambo” style game. You can’t just run off on your own to do objectives. You have literally 0 chance of doing it. This game is all down to teamwork. You need to support of you teammates, to even get anywhere near the objective. That’s what makes it so appealing to me. Nothing like beating a good defence, with rock solid teamwork. I’ll never be able to fully explain this game, it’s a game you need to play yourself to see what I mean.

    Windows Dreamscene Finally Arrives...

But I’m not a happy bunny. Why? Because it is pretty much the exact same build of Dreamscene that was released as a ‘preview’ a while ago. This [not so] shocking discovery was made by Rafael Rivera and Long Zheng. I’ve always been a big supporter of Microsoft, and I’ve always defended them when war breaks out in the forums across the internet. But you know what? This time I am not going to defend them. They deserve everything they get. Faces it folks, Windows Ultimate Extras is sham.

Maybe Microsoft can save this disaster, by regrouping the UEs team – if you don’t already know they disbanded sometime ago. UEs since they disbanded, have been virtually nonexistent.

Thank god I got my Ultimate Edition for free. Had I spent my money on Ultimate edition, I would have been fuming right now!

    The Ultimate Steal?

In short yes, it is the ultimate steal. Possibly the steal of the century. For those of you who don’t know what I’m going on about. Microsoft is offering students (who are at university) across the world Office 2007 Ultimate Edition for a mere £39.85! I’ve just finished installing my copy, it’s offered as an electronic download, and the Product Key is emailed to your University email address. To be eligible you must have a university email address – you know the ones that end in .ac.uk.

To get yourself a copy, go here.

Thanks a lot for this Microsoft, this sort of makes up for the lack of Ultimate Extras Tongue out

PS: Office 2007 Ultimate Edition retails at around £600. So this is well worth it.

Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

    NO SPOILERS AHEAD
I WILL NOT REVEAL ANYTHING CRUCIAL

Just finished reading Deathly Hallows – what a great read! My heart has never beaten so fast, and I’ve never cried out so loudly in my life. Harry Potter books have a way of dragging you inside the books and making you feel the way the characters feel, truly exceptional writing in my opinion.

As great as the book was (and it was honestly) there was a slight elemental of disappointment. Because this is what we (read: Harry Potter fans) have been waiting for since we read the first book. And we all wanted different endings, in tune with which characters we liked and which we didn’t. But not everyone could be pleased, I for one am very happy with the ending. I wouldn't change a thing, not one single thing.

I would like to thank JKR, for this fantastic (this word is an understatment, can't think of a word that truly describes my love for the books) series of books. That I will read again and again, and read them to my children and my childrens' children.

Review: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

I thought this was one of the best Harry Potter films yet, it isn't as "dark" as everyone says it is. It could have been much darker in my opinion. Obviously alot was left out from the book, it only deals with the main storyline. I do still feel however that Daniel and the rest can't really act. They either over-act or under-act. Only a couple times did I see REAL acting. (no offence meant to any of the actors)

Special effects were simply awesome, specially when Dumbledores Army were casting Expecto Patronum. Luna Lovegood didn't get enough screen-time, should have had way more!

I saw this at IMAX (Birmingham) so I got the 3D treatment, first time I've been to the IMAX so it was awesome. The Ministry of Magic battle was jaw dropping, although it didn't last long enough for my liking.

    8/10.

PS. Oh yeah, the kiss scene lingered on for too long.

    Microsoft Photosynth

I've been following this project, since it first came to my attention back in July 30th 2006. Basically Photosynth takes a load of pictures (and I mean LOADS - gigabytes worth!!) from the same environment but from different locations around that environment.

It then somehow pieces together a 3D environment for you to explore on your computer screen. It's hard to describe it fully, but if you try it for yourself you'll see what I mean. To give a better idea of what I'm on about, watch this video (another video you might want to watch) to see the power of Photosynth.

Not only does Photosynth understand images, but it understands text based images. For example in of the videos above (the youtube one), you can see an ENTIRE Jane Austin novel stored within Photosynth. It's not blurred either, you can zoom in and read the entire thing should you want to.

    Seriously folks, check it out.

    The Best Lost Theory

I'm a huge fan of the ABC show 'Lost' and I've read countless theories, but this one is the best one yet. It is so well researched it could well turn out to be true! Enough of the yapping here is the link to read it. Should the link be down, I've pasted the theory below...

The island is largely black rock - a naturally occurring magnetic mineral. It has the uncanny property of storing electromagnetic currents - like a big magnetic tape.

Magnus Hanso - grandfather of Alvar Hanso and venture capitalist - captained his ship The Black Rock to the island in the nineteenth century. He intended to use slaves and dynamite to mine the fabled black rock and sell it. However, he was caught in a storm - as many have been near the island - and was shipwrecked.

He survived, but the slaves were lost. Whilst making a boat to leave the island, Magnus thought he could hear the screams of his cargo as the ship sank. He thought the melancholy would pass, but it did not; in fact, it was as though he could literally hear their thoughts in the last moments of their lives - even in their foreign tongue.

The whispers, the voices, the memories were stronger in those areas that were predominantly black rock. They were coming from the black rock itself. As lava cools it records the earth’s pattern of magnetic currents at the time; in a similar way, the black rock was storing all electromagnetic activity - light, sound, thought, memory.

Of greater significance to Magnus was that the black rock also held the pattern of the future. Magnus was able to faintly sense how things would be.

Magnus made a boat, returned home, kept his mouth shut about what he’d discovered, and bought the island. He came back many times and was able to navigate the safest approach. On the island, he would meditate on what the future held - what the rock was telling him - and then commit this to paper. He would then return to centres of commerce and use these predictions to speculate and invest in forthcoming wars, selling munitions. He amassed a great fortune. The secret of the island and the wealth was passed down through the Hanso family to Alvar Hanso in the 20th century.

A mathematician named Valenzetti calculated a mathematical formula for the end of the world, the ‘core numbers’ of which are 4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42. These numbers occur everywhere, he said, and predict earth’s destruction. This finding was presented to the United Nations; they did not believe or care and so discarded it.

Alvar learnt of this formula and knew that it was correct as it correlated with what the island had revealed to him. He enlisted the help of Valenzetti and many others to form the DHARMA Initiative, the purpose of which was to change these numbers - and so avert the predicted destruction of earth.

DHARMA was based on the island. Although the organisation was highly secretive, Alvar felt he had to share the island for the greater good of mankind. The greatest scientists he could find were brought to the island - as were gifted children who had great mental ability bordering on psychic.

Various stations were set up on the island to perform these experiments: the objective of which was to change Fate itself. One experiment was the Swan; initially, it was just a Skinner Box - a psychological experiment to test two subjects’ willingness to repeatedly press a button because they were told it was important. The intention here was to see if their faith in their ‘duty’ was sufficient to budge Fate a millimetre. It didn’t work.

Another station - the Pearl - was set up. This experiment was based on another pair of subjects who were told to observe the actions of the occupants of the Swan. The objective here, based on Quantum Theory, was to see if - by observation alone - the outcome of the Swan could be affected. It was not and neither was Fate.

It was decided to try and dam the flow of Destiny from the island to the outside world - to stop the current.

Jacob was selected as the most gifted child. He was able to move small objects with his mind, which is shown in the Orientation film.
It was hoped that if the rock could store human memory electromagnetically then, perhaps, the reverse could happen and a human mind could absorb this electromagnetic memory from the rock. The intention was always to change Destiny.

Jacob was placed at the epicentre of the island’s power in an underground chamber. Powered up, wired up, and observed by a team of scientists including Dr Marvin Candle, Jacob attempted to absorb Destiny from the black rock. Unfortunately, he failed; there was an explosion, referred to later as the “incident”.

At that moment, Jacob lost all corporeal form and was merged with the black rock itself. But he survived. His consciousness was embedded in broken fragments of the rock. His consciousness was able to move objects - as he had in human form… but now it meant he could lift himself - in the form of rock fragments and move freely. The naturally-ocurring electromagnetic field around the area of the Swan assisted in his mobility and sustained his life.

Jacob was able to move as a black cloud of dust and re-form himself into different shapes. He soon learnt that he could also use electromagnetism to conjure up images and sound. And later still, that he could ‘read minds’ as we saw he did with Eko.

DHARMA had failed in changing Destiny for the better and had actually made things worse by creating a massive anomaly. Alvar was despondent. He and his wife returned to the island to die. They laid themselves down in two alcoves and allowed Jacob to peacefully end them. In Alvar’s pocket was a pouch containing two stones - one black and one white - one for him and one for his wife. They thought that if they could, after death, find these two stones and reside in them as separate consciousnesses then they would allow Jacob to absorb them into his form. As long as the black rock existed, they would be immortal. It worked; and Jacob became a ‘three-headed’ entity, referred to as ‘Cerberus’ on the blast door map created by Radzinsky. (Cerberus was the three-headed guard dog of Greek mythology).

The ‘incident’ (as described by Dr Marvin Candle - who lost an arm - in the Orientation film) now necessitated the periodic release of the electromagnetism. The periodic build-up of power sustained Jacob/Cerberus and allowed for continued analysis of Destiny by the remaining scientists; the periodic release prevented another disaster. The whole area of the ‘incident’ was concreted. And now the Swan had a genuine use: to release electromagnetism every 108 minutes to an orbiting satellite with a 5 minute pass-over. For this task they conscripted the help of two people they knew to be spies: Radzinsky and Inman for USSR and USA respectively.

They realised they could not - or should not - try to change Destiny. However, the long-term effect of the incident was to create an anomaly in Destiny that might itself be the cause of the predicted cataclysm on earth. This needed to be corrected now. The anomaly had pulled in a ship of scientists - including a pregnant Rousseau - and shipwrecked it. [What was left of] DHARMA realised that this ship was never ‘meant’ to be shipwrecked on the island and that their meddling with Destiny would create anomalies of wider and potentially more dangerous significance.

The scientists sought to correct their mistake before it snowballed. It was a difficult task to perform without screwing up Destiny further but they had the resources.

Bea Kulgh, a DHARMA initiate, sensed a shift from an idealistic community in ‘Otherville’ towards a totalitarian cult headed by a powerful triumvirate leader. She reached out for others who felt the same, but it was impossible - any disobedience meant being brainwashed in the re-programming room (where we saw Carl). During her tour of duty in the Pearl, which was still active at the time, she was able to secretly communicate with Radzinsky and Inman via the computer. She fed them information from which - with their own reconnaissance - they were able to produce a map of the island and the hatches, which John Locke saw on the blast door in Lockdown. They removed part of the Orientation film that forbade communication via the computer so that, if they were found out and replaced, their replacements would not be hindered by that rule. And they formulated a plan to escape.

Radzinsky had been seeing images of his past - as all of the Losties have. He saw people he had tortured whilst working for the KGB. These visions were actually produced by Jacob/Cerberus. The point of the visions was as intense, life-changing therapy. It is believed that a person can overcome their own past, nature and fears to transcend into something pure and fit for DHARMA. Radzinsky had been seeing visions of a person he had tortured; he had cut out the prisoner’s eye.

The culmination of the ‘therapy’ is a Test. We saw Eko fail his Test by refusing to repent for his past - this ended badly for him when he chased after Jacob/Cerberus. We also saw Hurley fail his test when he refused to take a leap of faith off a cliff - as urged by his imaginary-turned-real friend Dave.

Radzinsky’s Test was to cut out his own eye - “an eye for an eye”. He knew none of this was real, but they had a plan to escape for which he would do anything. Kneeling before his victim, as Eko would do, Radzinsky used Inman’s US Army knife to cut out his own eye, thereby passing the Test.

When Radzinsky awoke, he was greeted by Benjamin Linus and the other Others. He was given a tour of ‘Otherville’, told the rough outline of DHARMA and what it meant. He was given a glass eye and was put to work. He appeared to be receptive to DHARMA’s aims but, in reality, all he wanted was to escape. He proceeded with the plan.

At the right time, he blew up the Arrow hatch, killing several people. He radioed Inman, in the Swan, immediately and ran across the island towards him. It did not take long before Jacob/Cerberus tracked him down, but he timed it right so that his dash would coincide with the rain showers to give him the biggest headstart possible.

Radzinsky made it to the Swan where Inman had prepared the trap. It was dark by now, and a bright light shone from the hatch; Jacob/Cerberus followed it down. Inman could see Jacob/Cerberus through his array of mirrors from the safe vantage point of the Swan lounge area. He saw Jacob/Cerberus approach; Jacob/Cerberus moved toward the open door. Radzinsky fused the lockdown door bringing it crashing down and turned the water on. The area outside the door - where Jacob/Cerberus was - filled with water. An exposed fusebox near the ladder caused a massive electrical current to pass through Jacob/Cerberus. Unfortunately, a small part of Jacob/Cerberus got under the door before being completely disabled. This part reformed as someone from Inman’s past - a daughter perhaps, or a fallen comrade - whoever it was, Inman had not yet had the visions and was frozen with emotion. He could not act to destroy this loved one in front of him and would not heed Radzinksy’s frantic pleading that it was not real and that they needed to escape now while they could. Radzinsky left him behind.

[The fusebox and water pipe are seen by Jack the very first time he goes down the hatch ladder - season 2, episode 1.]

Radzinsky continued with the plan and left the Swan with the film cutting. He made his way to the Flame where he knew he would be able to communicate with the outside world and be rescued. When he got there, he was surprised to find it deserted and, what was more bizarre, prepared for him: there was a plentiful supply of Vodka, there was a computer that played chess, there was a cat, there was even a picture of Nadia Comaneci on the wall - the Olympic gymnast who shared his birthday. He sat in front of a bank of monitors and began trying to reach the outside world - it had been such a long time. Flicking through the channels, it became apparent that the Berlin Wall had fallen and so had the Soviet Union with it. Communication was pointless. He spent the next few days in a drunken stupor. At last, Benjamin and the Others came to him.

They agreed on a truce; he had killed some of them but he could not be held completely responsible as he had not passed the Test in truth and had not been truly ready to join DHARMA. They allowed him to live so long as he never came to their camp, never fraternised with any of them, and worked at the Flame as their communications man. He would be completely autonomous, with his own livestock. He asked about Inman; they told him that Inman had been ‘persuaded’ that Radzinsky had killed himself - they had placed a faceless corpse in the Swan for him to discover when he woke up, which he would assume to be Radzinsky’s and so bury him without questioning.

At this point, the cat changed shape becoming a swirling mass of black dust - it was Jacob/Cerberus albeit temporarily smaller. Jacob/Cerberus renamed Radzinsky as Bakunin - after the famous Russian anarchist - as he had rejected his leadership. He told him that his trap in the Swan had interfered with the release of electromagnetism and had created another anomaly: a light aircraft from Nigeria was brought down. The crashing of a small plane and the loss of a few lives in itself might not be such an anomaly - as Destiny can ‘course-correct’ to a certain extent - what was more problematic was that the plane was carrying drugs. The consequence of the plane crashing - when it had never been destined to crash - was that there would be a massive slump in supply of the drug, affecting many more lives (including Charlie’s) - and the knock-on effect was incalculable.

Bakunin was tasked with tracking down the effects of the anomaly as it spread through the world and to profile each person whose life would be significantly affected by it. These people were connected one way or another to this crash or to each other and the anomaly would ripple outwards creating greater and greater waves. Bakunin tracked them down using the Flame. These people were - one way or another - put on the same plane at the same time and brought to the island so that Destiny could be corrected…. Jack, Kate, Charlie, Sawyer, Rose and the rest of Flight 815. Destiny and DHARMA were course-correcting.

Bakunin returned to the burntout Arrow station. He was remorseful. He deposited his hollowed-out Bible containing the film cutting, his glass eye which had been a gift from DHARMA, and the radio he had used to communicate with his friend Inman.

When Desmond turned the failsafe key in the Swan and caused it to implode, he was rescued by Jacob/Cerberus, but not before he had absorbed much of the Swan’s power. Now, DESmond does not see the future but DEStiny - how things are planned to happen - not necessarily how they will happen.

    God of War II

While our friends in the US have had this game for a while - 13th March 07. I only got it on the 28th April – and completed this on the 2nd of May. Clocking up a total of 12.5 hours of total mindblowing fun!

God of War II is the very successful sequel to God of War (duh!). Everything has improved and new features have been added. One of my favourite new features is the swinging system. It’s oh so perfect. It is THE best swinging mechanism that I have ever seen. The fighting system is practically the same, probably just been tweaked here and there. I find it much easier to clock up 3 figure combos than before. Each and every move links seamless into one another – there is no “lag” time.

This is the best game that PS2 has to offer in my opinion what with the PS3 out now, I would say it’s the perfect end to a brilliant console. No PS2 is complete without GOW/GOWII.

For those who haven’t heard of God of War (shame on you). It follows the story of a Spartan warrior – Kratos – who is betrayed by the Gods of Olympus. Kratos then undertakes a perilous journey to destroy them – that’s the general gist of it. The story is a lot more complicated than that, just that I’m lazy. Your journey takes you to places you could never imagine. The environments are so massive; on a scale so huge that you jaw will drop time after time.

Kratos has an arsenal of weapons. The most useful and mostly used are the Blades of Chaos/Athena. They are a pair of Blades linked with chains that have been seared to his skin. They have an immense range and manoeuvrability – often smiting enemies from afar.  Along with a different number of weapons, your also get several magic abilities. My favourite ones are Poseidon rage (from GOW) and Atlas Quake (from GOWII). You can also upgrade weapons and magical abilities by collecting orbs – to get new types of attack and increasing range and damage.

All in all GOWII is the best sequel a game has ever had. Usually sequels a piss poor and are only made for “cash cow” purposes. But GOWII is different; it surpasses the original in every way.

God of War III is in the making for the PS3, which means I’ll have to buy the PS3 to see the final chapter of this awesome gaming trilogy. But I don’t mind. This series is worth it.

Stargate SG-1: The end of an era

10 years of the best Sci-Fi programming that has graced our screens came to an end this night. That’s right – Stargate SG1 has come to an end . The final ever episode aired on Tuesday 13th March 2007 at 20.00 on SkyOne.

It was never going to fill anyone expectations. SG-1 has a huge following throughout the world and the internet, each and every one of us has different hopes and expectations for the final episode. Obviously the producers couldn’t give everyone what they wanted. They did their best.

It’s very hard to finalise a brilliant & exceptional program that has been running for 10 years in 1 hour – the producers had a very hard job, what were they meant to include in the final edit? I for one would have liked to see the ever so elusive ‘Furlings’ .

Just in case (in the highly unlikey event) anyone from the SG1 production team is reading - you did a fantastic job and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

I would also like to say goodbye to the ‘Asgard’ these little grey fellows have been just a joy to watch . I especially enjoyed the moments between Thor and O’Neil. Man did they make me grin and chuckle. Farewell (the?) Asgard.

As for what lies ahead? Well 2 Stargate movies are in works and due to be released in late 2007:

Stargate: The Ark of Truth – This movie is to wrap up the story arc with the Ori. SG-1 travel to the Ori [home] galaxy (ooo scary). To find something called ‘The Ark of Truth’ – hopefully to get rid of the Ori for once and for all.

Stargate: Continuum – This movie is on a completely different tangent and is to do with Baal (yay!) stealing the Stargate.

As for the cast of SG1, they are all obviously doing the upcoming movies of SG-1. But they do have different projects planned after the movies:

Daniel Jackson (as played by Michael Shanks) – Is rumoured to be appearing the in the hit US drama 24 as a recurring character! I for one would absolutely enjoy this. I’ve always wondered who would win in a fight between an Ascended Daniel and Jack Bauer. Anyway more on Michael appearing in 24 here.

Samantha Carter (as played by Amanda Tapping) – Is starring in her own TV show called the Sanctuary. In which she plays a Doctor of 157 years of age and deals with freaks of nature etc etc. You can learn more about Sanctuary here. She will also be appearing in Stargate: Atlantis for atleast 14 episodes. What she will actually do there we don’t know – but we do tknow that she has her own ship (w00t!)

Teal’c (as played by Christopher Judge) – Is also slated to appear in Stargate: Atlantis but only as a cameo and not a ‘central’ role and only for one episode early on in Season 4.

I haven’t heard anything regarding Claudia Black (Vala Mal Doran) & Ben Browder (Cameron Mitchell).

On a final note – farewell SG1 you have helped my geeky-ness mature into uber-geeky-ness and for that I thank you. I eagerly await the movies.

    Forever a Stargate fan, Singh400.

One Key to Decrypt Them All

If you haven't already heard, the protection on the next generation format has been circumvented. I say circumvented because no hacking or cracking tools were used.

It’s kind of complicated but from what I understand a processing key has been found that will decrypt any Blu-Ray and HD-DVD movie.

Before you had to find the decryption key for each movie. This was done by playing the selected movie in Power DVD HD (or any other player capable of playing HD content) and dumping the memory.

I’m not the best person to explain it, but that’s the general gist of it. DailyTech have a much better article explaining it in further detail. I suggest you read it.

    Loki Has Vanished... For Now

Well the game I've been talking about on this blog has official finished. Loki has posted a message on the main site. But theres still hope yet, she talks about seeing her at the next VanishingPoint! Which for main is a great relief, because we (the technologically and puzzling solving community) have really enjoyed this game.

I wonder what the next VanishingPoint is? Could it be the next Windows Client OS? Or could it be the upcoming Windows Longhorn Server?

Loki also emailed all those who took part in the game and gave us plenty of information about herself and her real name.

Heres copy and paste from the email I recieved:

"Congratulations on a game well played, and thank you for helping us disappear.

You were not the first to guess our identity, but because you played our game, we want to tell you our secret.

There is no such person as Loki - or rather, she is four sisters who decided to be one extraordinary person.

Each of us has a unique talent:

Lorelei is our tinkerer.  Clocks and counting, space and time:  she is our genius.

Odessa is our performer, our actress and magician, the girl we send in to dazzle and charm.  Odessa goes to meetings:  Loki gets promoted.  It's very convenient.

Kara is our reader.  With a love of history and a photographic memory, she gives us access to any fact, figure, or event at a moment's notice.

Ivy is our spy.  She's the girl you dont notice, the face you don't remember, and vanishing is what she does best.  Ivy has gotten us out of more than one impossible situation.

Together, we have presented L.O.K.I. to the world.  Our mask and super-hero, LOKI has allowed us each to be bigger than ourselves.

When we heard Microsoft and AMD were looking to give extraordinary prizes to exceptional people, we knew LOKI could never find a more perfect job.  This, Odessa said, would be a trick we could never top.  O, how we wanted this job!  (And what clever, unfair, underhanded things we did to the other applicants to make sure we got it!  But that's another story.)  And once we got the job, we all agreed that Loki's greatest triumph would be her last.

We created the Vanishing Point to reward the smartest minds (and communities) on the planet - and still we underestimated you.  We used our smarts and our guile, not to mention money and connections and countless hours of time - and still you humbled us.  We knew the terrain and barely gave you a mapand that didn't stop you.  We built puzzles that should have taken you days and you solved them in hours.

"Loki" is a genius:  but you were far more brilliant.  You were thought made fire.  You were lightning.

Thank you for your work, your talent, and your dedication.  It has been a privilege to witness:  an honor and a delight.

For each of us to live, Loki had to die.  Thank you, thank you beyond words for taking her to the Vanishing Point.

    Lorelei

    Kara

    Thats all for now folks.

    VanishingPointGame.com Update

Well a lot has happened at VPG.com since I last made a blog entry. 4 puzzle boxes have been opened and solved by many with the help of the great people of Neowin and Unfiction forums.

Each puzzle box contained 12 puzzles - 4 easy, 4 medium and 4 hard. The grand prize is a trip to space – the outer edge of Earths atmosphere.

But that’s not all, hidden throughout the game was another puzzle, sort of a mini puzzle. In some of the puzzles little white boxes were present which you had to collect – 36 in total (48 puzzles in total). These little white boxes would eventually give you clues as to the games masters (“Loki”) ‘vanishingpoint’. The first person to find Lokis vanishingpoint would have their name engraved on an AMD chip. The ultimate prize for the uber-geek.

There a lot of other prizes too, Vista Ultimate copes, Dell laptop, Dell desktop PCs. Loads of stuff is being given away, just for taking part in possibly the most exciting online/offline puzzle in the world.

Although this game is for the benefit of Microsoft, it was designed and created by 42 Entertainment. I bow to the people of 42 for creating such a brilliant and intricate game.

PS. In other news, Windows Vista was official launched across the world.

    VanishingPointGame.com

So it was an ordinary Thursday - that was until I received a mysterious black shiny envelope....from Microsoft. At which point I thought "What the hell? I'm not due any goodies or requested any media"

Inside the envelope were a nice letter (very mysterious letter) and a USB Stick. So naturally I plugged in the USB Stick - I thought it was going to be empty (I didn't bother to read the letter, no male does lol). But on the USB stick were 3 files:

    Cipher Key 4.jpg

    from_Loki.txt

    Loki.wmv

    The text file said:

"Well done! Now you have your first cipher key, plus a video my employer didn’t think you needed to see. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him.

Do others deserve to see these files, too? I’ll leave that up to you.

    ~Loki

P.S. Go to vanishingpointgame.com to find out what to do next."

The video was weird, it featured a lady named Loki (I presume) and it had these lingering shots of random objects (or not so random objects).

The image featured a 20(columns) x3(rows) grid with highlighted squares. I had no idea what to do. I've uploaded the image to Imageshack for everyone to see:

    http://img187.imageshack.us/img187/8981/cipherkey4fn2.jpg

After this I opened Google (yes I know it should be Live Search, but old habits die hard). And came across a thread at Neowin.... my heart sank. People had already been receiving these waaayyy before I'd even got mine (mine was shipped from America on the 29th Dec 06, plus I live in the UK) and the majority of the puzzles (including mine!) were already solved!! :( But I was determined to do this alone, no fun if you cheat yourself it is! So I banned myself from that thread on Neowin, until I solved the puzzle by myself. After a few more minutes of Googling, I came across a blog which showed an image remarkably like the cipher image you see above:

    http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/5674/vanishing20point20game2kf7.jpg

It linked back to the IEBlog (I visit this on a regular basis, but because of no new articles, I didn't bother to scroll down!!)

Anyway, now that I had the information that I needed - I began my quest!

I merged the 2 images using Fireworks to get this:

    http://img101.imageshack.us/img101/311/gridbasicwithcharshighlof7.png

Now if we write those characters that are highlighted in order we get:

    PF6N ZZ FP NV QJ

Ok, now we go back to the cipher image and read the sentence at the bottom:

"To decrypt, perform Rot -1 on letters and -1 on numbers. Then shift one key left."

At first, the bit that stumped me was the 'Rot'. I kept thinking rotate -1. Anyway after several minutes of agonising and getting nowhere. I decided to try a different approach. I started applying the -1 in the literally sense as in go back one - so if you have the letter B and go back (Rot -1) you get A, same thing with numbers.. If you follow that rule, you'll get:

    OE5M YY EO MU PI

Ok, so now we follow the last bit of instructions in the cipher image, which were:

    "Then shift one key left."

Presumably that only works on a standard QWERTY keyboard layout, anyway. Following that piece of advice we get:

    IW4N TT WI NY OU

That gives you the final cipher:

    IW4NTTWINYOU

Which any self respecting geek should be able to read. You then enter this code on VanishingPointGame.com and that leads you to another puzzle. Once you solve that, it gives you a phone number (US only). When you ring that number, a voice asks for a pin number, enter the PIN number (which you should have got from solving the second puzzle).

Windows Vista Covers (DVD Label & DVD Cover)

Made these covers and labels in Fireworks. I used one image from here (the black vista box for DVD label).

    I've made both 32 & 64-bit version.

I've made the case and labels to the exact size, all you have to do is print them out and be handy with a pair of scissors.

    So I've moved house! (again)

Well I did disappear for a reason, not just fo fun!

I've moved house again (for the 3rd in 2 years) - don't worry though this is the final move (I think!).

We moved on the 23rd Nov, broadband wasn't activated until the Dec 15th.

I'm currently sitting in the lounge watching Strictly Come Dancing, and using a borrowed laptop & usb wifi adapter from my cousin (who have also moved - next door no less!)

The move went really well, I've become a pro at moving house now.

Got some surprises later on for you (hint: has to do with the blog post below).

Windows Vista Given to Beta Testers!

If you haven't already heard - Microsoft are giving copies of Windows Vista to Beta Testers for FREE. This is a completely unexpected move on Microsofts part. We (yes I’m a Beta Tester) weren’t really expecting anything, the majority of us were hoping for a 180 day trial of Windows Vista. But for Microsoft to give us Windows Vista for free was just totally unexpected.

We had the choice of Business or Ultimate edition (if unfamiliar with the different Vista editions, read this). No prizes for guessing which edition I chose and which edition my fellow beta participants chose.

Thank you Microsoft, you’ve made me very happy. Plus you’ve saved me £369.99 – which is never a bad thing.

What you have seen here folks is a great OS develop and mature in front of your very own eyes. I would like to congratulate not just the whole of the Vista team, but all of Microsoft - and I wish you great success.
